UC San Diego Nevada Cancer Institute – Las Vegas, NV                                              July 2010 – Present 

PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Develop and direct six-week, research-based, CDC/SNHD grant-funded smoking cessation program for work sites inSouthern Nevada’s tourism and hospitality industry. Market program to major hospitality businesses as method to minimize employer loss of wages and state expenditures on illnesses related to health care from smoking. Lead staff of up to two personnel. Manage $400K annual expense budget, program auditing, and grant reporting.

Notable Accomplishments:

w        Achieved 55% program completion rate among 157 individuals enrolled in program by conducting smoking cessation classes at UNLV, NV Energy, and MGM Resorts. 69% of participants quit smoking and 31% reduced smoking.

w        Secured buy-in from more than 14 corporations including Bellagio and UNLV to launch cessation programs.

w        Built community awareness by orchestrating and executing health fairs, community events, and educational sessions on tobacco use/prevention and age-, gender-, race-specific statistics on tobacco use.

w        Raised awareness of smoking cessation issues among community leaders and government officials by supporting legislative efforts to reduce tobacco usage as member of Nevada Tobacco Prevention Coalition.

 

U.S. Bureau of the Census – Las Vegas, NV                                                           March 2010 – June 2010

Led 20-member team to collect data for 2010 U.S. census from 6,000 homes. Certified daily work and pay records.

w        Ramped up team of 20 personnel to meet aggressive two-month data collection timeline by training, leading, and motivating staff.

Sickle Cell Disease Association of America – Jacksonville, NC                       January 2007 – August 2009 

GENETIC COUNSELOR / GRANT PROGRAM SPECIALIST

Planned, implemented, and managed of grant programs/HRSA NewBorn screening grant. Provided patients with case management and disease management including community resources, advocacy, and education. Served as community, school, and medical facility advocate for developmental, school, and workplace accommodations. Planned and evaluated events and delivered motivational presentations to SCD patients.

w        Played key role in maximizing patient care through involvement in development of emergency medical ID card program that provided physicians with web-based access to medical records and patient/professional perspective for HRSA-funded Stedman-Wade grant.

w        Counseled and guided more than 300 families affected by sickle cell disease throughout eight-county catchment area.

Managed operations of four residential group homes, including personnel hiring, training, credentialing, and termination. Coordinated treatment and behavior plan development.
